Tongji University was established in 1907 by Erich Paulun, a German doctor in Shanghai. The name Tongji suggests cooperating by riding the same boat. It was one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in china. It is now a comprehensive university boasting nine disciplines, namely Engineering, Science, Medicine, Arts, Law, Philosophy, Economics, Management and Education.

As a university which had established a reputation for its research, Tongji became one of the first group of universities which were authorized by the China State Council to establish its Graduate School. As a national key university, Tongji is enlisted in the “211 program” (selecting around 100 universities to be developed) funded by the National Ministry of Finance and is one of the high-level universities in the National Action Plan for Invigorating Education.

Tongji is exploring to form the modern educational ideology and philosophy with its own characteristics. Tongji has established the quality-oriented “Knowledge, Competence and Personality” education and interdisciplinary talents cultivation mode. Tongji attaches great importance to its four university functions as “Talent Cultivation, Scientific Research, Social Service, and International Exchange”. Tongji strive to make complimentary development between strong disciplines and weak ones so as to form disciplinary chain and group, and finally establish a comprehensive academic system. Tongji will strive for more academic awards, during its contribution to China’s economic and social development, to further promote our university’s academic position and social reputation.
